PAGASA Weather News and Update August 16, 2012


August 16, 2012 at 4:00 a.m. today, Tropical Storm "HELEN" was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 290 km West Northwest of Laoag City (19.1°N 117.7°E) with maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 24 kph. Southwest monsoon affecting Luzon and Western Visayas. 

5:51 AM 8/16/2012 Western section of Luzon will experience occasional to frequent rains which may trigger flashfloods and landslides while the rest of Luzon and Western Visayas will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. 

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Southwest will prevail over Luzon and Western Visayas and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the South to Southwest with slight to moderate seas.
