FIBA Asia Cup: Gilas Pilipinas wins against Singapore for 2nd win

The Gilas Pilipinas national team wins against Singapore 74-57 on Monday in the FIBA Asia Cup in Wuhan, China.

The Filipinos scored the first nine points of the game to set the tone for their second straight win, following up their 78-64 victory over Chinese Taipei last Saturday. In that match, Gilas opened the game with a 10-0 run.

But unlike against the Taiwanese, the Philippines did not have any late scare against its Southeast Asian rival, leading from start to finish.

Gary David scored all 10 of his points in the first half while Paul Lee added 10 of his own to lead Gilas, which is using the FIBA Asia Cup as part of its buildup for the FIBA Basketball World Cup and the Asian Games basketball tournament later this year. The Philippines built their win on defense, holding Singapore to miserable 25 percent shooting from the field.

Ng Hangbin, a star for the ASEAN Basketball League's Singapore Slingers, led his team with 17 points, while Wei Long Wong added 16.

Gilas wraps up its preliminary round assignment on Tuesday against Jordan.
