Top Ten Universities in the Philippines

Level IV Accreditation
Two Philippine universities have achieved level IV accreditation by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies in the Philippines and PAASCU. They are De la Salle University (DLSU) and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), both located in Metro Manila.

ADMU

According to a study of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) of the Philippines. ADMU ranked sixth and its autonomous Davao branch ranked fifth in 2007. ADMU is a Christian University. Its expressed goal is to send students into the world who will bring honor to their God and to their country through socially beneficial Christian works. ADMU offers not only college level and post-graduate courses, but elementary school and high school as well.

DLSU

DLSU is operated by the Jesuits. As is true in the United States, so here do the Jesuits maintain high standards in the field of education. The university is not named after the famous French explorer, but after its founder Jean Baptiste de la Salle. DLSU did not make the top 10 in the study under consideration.

UST

The Dominicans are in charge of the University of Santo Tomas (UST). It is named after St. Thomas Aquinas, a 13th-century Dominican theologian. UST ranked seventh in the study cited above. Besides Christian studies, UST offers quality education in a wide variety of academic disciplines. The same is true of ADMU and DLSU.

UP

The University of the Philippines (UP) is a secular system of seven autonomous branches. According to its website, it is the "only national university in the Philippines." In the 2007 study cited above, three branches of this university gained the three top spots. First place went to the branch in Diliman, a district of Quezon City. The other winners are located in Los BaƱos and Manila.

Another Manila University

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila placed ninth in the survey cited.

MSU

ligan Institute of Technology ranked eighth. Iligan lies on the northern coast of the island of Mindanao. This institute is a branch of the Mindanao State University, whose main campus is further inland in the nearby city of Marawi.

Two Ranking Schools

Silliman University, ranking fourth, is located in the city of Dumaguete on the island of Negros. The tenth-ranked St. Louis University has its campus in Baguio City in northern Luzon.

Another Survey

The results were different in a 2010 survey by 4 International Colleges and Universities. DLSU ranked first; the University of the Philippines took five different places; the University of Santo Tomas and ADMU of Manila made the grade; but the others mentioned above dropped out of the top ten. Newcomers to the list were the Asian Institute of Management in Metro Manila and the University of San Carlos in Cebu.

Evaluation of Criteria, Part 1

This latter survey ranked each university according to the popularity of its website. While this survey shows which universities have a good reputation, it does not accurately measure the quality of education in each university.

Evaluation of Criteria, Part 2

The criterion used by PRC and CHED are somewhat better. They ranked each university by how well its students fared in board exams. Yet this only shows which universities have the best students. It does not directly reveal which universities have the best teachers.

The Two Surveys Have Value

Still these two surveys give a good idea which universities deserve to be in the top 10. It is impossible to measure how much teachers actually know about their field of study and how effective they are in communicating their knowledge. Even their degrees will not reveal this crucial information.
